Then Joseph tells her a bedtime story: the tale of a boy who wandered into a cave in the ice age and met something that called itself God, and came back wrong. By morning, May has fled into the woods toward a farmhouse that might be salvation... but Joseph has his sledgehammer, and God is always talking to him.
